Why does AI fail?
AA: We hear a lot about organizations struggling to affect change with AI and data science. You hear about all these statistics of 85 percent of projects failing. Do you think this is true? And if it is, why is it happening when there’s an abundance of data? Technology is quite cheap these days. Where are organizations going wrong in actually trying to generate value from it?
AD: You just said it. Technology is abundant, data is abundant, but is literacy abundant? No. Yes, AI projects are failing massively. There is also migration to the cloud: there have been huge problems with maintaining it and getting value out of it. AI and the cloud right now are the It Girls: they’re failing massively. I’m not saying nobody’s successful, but there are a lot of failures. Before them, it was advanced analytics that failed massively. Before that, data warehousing failed massively, or maybe data lakes.
