Setting up for success
AA: We’ve talked a bit about where organizations can go wrong when trying to build up a data-driven capability. If you were to go into a greenfield setting, how would you try and get things right from day one, in terms of the people, strategy, culture, and infrastructure? Then, assuming they have data and a legitimate business problem, what would be your key steps to ensuring the journey begins correctly?
DT: This is a very tough question. I get asked this a lot by companies, and unfortunately, there’s no completely right solution for everyone.
Usually, what I recommend is that you need to hire one key person to drive the journey.
Obviously, there are so many things around that, such as when to hire the right people. But you usually need someone who understands a good data-driven culture.
