I greatly enjoyed my conversation with Christina. She offered some pragmatic advice for organizations that are beginning their data-driven journey, such as managing your costs from an early stage as “the right talent is going to cost you” – this aligns with Charles’s views (in Chapter 5) that data science is not cheap.
I couldn’t agree more with her idea of starting small with the right people in the right roles and remaining focused on delivering value to the business before growing your data and analytics capability – this is a common theme discussed in this book. Christina suggests doing a “data value identification process” and working on ensuring a minimum level of data literacy in the organization – including establishing a common understanding of the value of data-driven decision-making.
