What makes a good data leader?
AA: Speaking of leadership, what do you think makes a good data leader, such as a CDO or equivalent? What do you think are some of the key characteristics, attitudes, and skills that they need?
MR: A good CDO is someone who recognizes the limitations of their own knowledge and is skilled at delegating tasks to their team – trusting them to execute. This requires letting go of control and accepting that it’s impossible to have all the answers or oversee everything. It can be particularly difficult for those with a strong technical background, who are used to always having a solution.
As modern CDOs, we need to empower our teams and delegate responsibility.
While we should always be available to offer guidance or support, it’s important to recognize when our team members need help and provide them with resources such as code coach clinic experts.
