Chapter 7. Adding Spark to Your Game

You already know how to take the idea in your head and turn it into an interactive scene with nicely textured models and physical behavior. You are ready to add the final touches and effects to your game. jMonkeyEngine supports two types of effects: particle systems and post-processor filters.

Particle systems use series of 2D images (sprites) to create the impression of moving swarms and fuzzy clouds, which cannot be visualized by 3D meshes. Particle effects come to the rescue—whether you need fire and smoke, explosions and spells, or butterflies and soap bubbles.

Post-processor filters work on a larger scale and provide you with screen-wide effects such as focal blurs and blooms. Filter effects make use of the engine's shader architecture and can produce anything from realistic shadows to artistic cartoon styles.
