Recreating the VM template


When your VDI environment is established and everything is working, you will probably face a painful situation, especially with Pooled VMs. After a while, it is very common that the base image, or the VM template, becomes outdated, either because there have been many Windows updates, or because the application itself needs to be updated.

On a Personal VM collection, as the VM progress is being saved, you can simply update the VMs and everything will work just fine. However, on a Pooled VM collection, the VM state is reverted to its original state and all the changes, including updates to the SO and application, will be reverted.

To work with this situation, you can update the base image, or VM template. There are many options to do so—for example, tools such as MDOP, System Center Configuration Manager, System Center Virtual Machine Manager, and many others.
