Deploying S2D on Windows Server

While S2D is truly an abstracted software-defined data center technology from Microsoft, all architectures should entail a best-practices implementation that considers the physical configuration, networking configuration, a newly managed filesystem, and the latest tools provided by Microsoft for managing this S2D technology.

With that said, I recommend the following with any S2D designs to make a positive impact on the overall performance, resiliency, and stability of your clusters:

  • Use certified Windows Server clustered solutions (Azure Stack HCI solutions)
  • Utilize Windows Admin Center to create and manage S2D
  • Use RDMA-enabled network configurations where appropriate
  • Use SET, as discussed in the Implementing networking for S2D section of this chapter
  • Use an ReFS where applicable
