Monitoring Azure Virtual Machines using the Azure Diagnostics extension

The Azure Diagnostics extension is yet another agent in Azure Monitor that is responsible for collecting monitoring data, including event logs and performance data, from the guest OS of Azure virtual machines. The Azure Diagnostics extension does not require any additional software on the virtual machine and utilizes a diagnostic storage account for sending diagnostic data.

Note that the Azure Diagnostics extension can only be used with Azure resources and while there is no cost associated with using the extension, costs might be incurred based on any data consumed.

The primary uses of the Azure Diagnostics extension include the following:

  • Sending limited data to Azure Monitor Metrics to take advantage of the Metrics Explorer and real-time metric alerts
  • Sending diagnostics data to Azure Storage for review with Azure Storage Explorer or simply for archiving purposes
