SharePoint site templates

SharePoint Site templates (previously called site designs) can be used to create new sites or modify and extend existing sites with reusable configurations. SharePoint Online includes several predefined templates for communication sites and team sites, and organizations can create custom templates. Built-in site templates can be replaced with an organization’s custom template, which applies the custom template during site creation automatically if the template is not chosen.

A site template consists of a title, description, web template, and one or more site scripts.

The web template property indicates which type of site the template can be applied to. The following values are supported:

  • 64: Team site template
  • 1: Team site without a link to the Microsoft 365 group
  • 68: Communication site
  • 69: Channel site
