Built-in term sets

The term store in SharePoint online includes several built-in term sets, which are automatically created. These term sets can be used and managed similarly to other term sets.

Term sets in the search dictionaries term group are not available on SharePoint online and are not covered in this book.

People

Underneath the people term group, there are three term sets whose terms are automatically provisioned based on user profiles:

  • Job title: Terms are created from the user’s job title property in Azure Active Directory.
  • Department: Terms are created based on the user’s department property in Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Location: Terms are created automatically based on Office location in the user’s profile in SharePoint. Users can edit and add new values to the term set by editing their profile. These values are not synchronized with Azure AD.
