Managed metadata and term store

Managed metadata in SharePoint online is made up of three core structures:

  • Term groups: These can be used to create logical groups of term sets, for example, all term sets about human resources metadata would be in a term group called HR. A term group also creates a management layer for allowing specific people to manage all term sets and terms within a term group.
  • Term sets: These hold term hierarchies of some specific metadata or topic, for example, department or location.
  • Terms: These are the actual metadata values and can be used in site columns to describe documents, list items, or other SharePoint content.
