Permission levels

By default, there are five permission levels on SharePoint sites:

  • Full Control: Full control over site content, lists and libraries, permissions, and settings. Site owners have this permission.
  • Design: Manage lists, libraries, and content, as well as approve content.
  • Edit: Manage lists, libraries, and content.
  • Contribute: Manage content.
  • Read: View and download published content.

By default, the owner has the Full Control permission and members have the Edit permission. Custom permission levels can be created, but these should only be used for specific requirements. Sometimes, you might need to add an approve permission to site members, which can be achieved by adding the design permission level to the site members group.
