Controlling external sharing

You can manage how you externally share content via several access controls. Sharing files and folders is managed with sharing policies via the SharePoint admin center. There are four levels when it comes to sharing files and folders:

  • Anyone: Files and folders can be shared anonymously and are accessed using a link. Anyone with the link can access the shared content.
  • New and existing guests: People are invited via email to share content. They can sign in with their Microsoft account or use a one-time passcode with other email providers. Only people with invited email addresses can access the shared content. Users can invite new guest users to AAD.
  • Existing guests: Content can only be shared with external users who have already been invited via AAD.
  • Only people in your organization: External sharing is disabled for the whole tenant and cannot be overridden:
