Overview of this book

This book, written by a team of experts at Unity Technologies, follows an informal, demystifying approach to the world of game development. Within Unity 3D Game Development, you will learn to: Design and build 3D characters and game environments Think about the users’ interactions with your game Develop an interface and apply visual effects to add an emotional connection to your world Gain a solid foundation of sound design, animations, and lighting Build, test, and add final touches The book contains expert insights that you’ll read before you look into the project on GitHub to understand all the underpinnings. This way, you get to see the end result, and you’re allowed to be creative and give your own thoughts to design, as well as work through the process with the new tools we introduce. Design and concept

To make a character, there can be many dimensions. We want to make sure that the hero character of this vertical slice, Myvari, is as fleshed out as possible. One of the best tools for this is asking “why” for aspects of the character.

Asking why

We are building an adventure-based puzzle game. The first question that comes to mind is: why is the character on this adventure? In this case, we answered that question with: “She is seeking to find answers about her race’s past that aren’t in the stories being told or the books she’s read.” Now we’ve defined a few things, but there are still more questions.

To give an idea of the questions that came up from this initial answer, look at this list:

  • What race is she and why does this matter to the story?
  • Why female?
  • Why is her history hidden?
  • What is her clothing like?
  • What does the race look like?
  • Is she humanoid...
