Custom italics with Shear


There have been a few times where I've been working with a font that has no oblique style to it. Programs such as Photoshop have a way to force oblique styles on fonts, but Cinema 4D has no such feature with their Text splines or MoText objects. This recipe shows you a handy use of the Shear deformer to force the italicization of your text in Cinema 4D.

How to do it...

  1. Create a new Text spline from the Command Palette, and then pick any font you want to work with (even if it is in italics, use a normal style for this exercise) in the font menu. I'm going to use a font called Ostrich Sans. Enter Cinema 4D in the Text field, and then add a Shear deformer from the Command Palette to your scene. Place it as a child of your Text spline.

  2. There are only a few properties to change, so load your Shear object into the Attribute Manager, and look into the Object tab. Change the Strength value to 70, and watch how your text now has an italic look to it. Reduce the Curvature to...
